· “Genius or Intellect? Debating the Qualifications for Generals during the Civil War” - Carol Reardon
à Lincoln faced many challenges in selecting generals during the war. Our speaker provides an examination of the military theory of the era and the debate over what constituted a military “professional.”
· “John Work Garrett and Mr. Lincoln’s Railroad” - Daniel Toomey
à One of the men seen in the photos of Lincoln’s visit to Antietam is John Work Garrett President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. He and the president were close friends throughout the war.
· “Lincoln Meets his Wounded Field Commanders after Antietam” - Dr. Gordon Dammann
à Lincoln made a special effort to visit two field commanders wounded during battle including Gen. Israel Richardson and Gen. George Hartstuff. This lecture will examine the reason for the presidential visit.

à One of the most iconic homes at Antietam, this early 19th century structure is the scene of one of the most famous photos in U.S. history.

· Harpers Ferry where the President reviewed the 2nd Corps.
· Showman farm near Sharpsburg where Lincoln camped with General McClellan
· Grove Farm where Lincoln and McClellan were photographed with other generals of the Army of the Potomac and more!

Gen. John McClernand accompanied Lincoln on his Antietam visit. We will examine his military career and others.
· “McClellan’s Greatest Gift to Lincoln” - Dennis Frye
à It didn’t come on the battlefield. It didn’t come in a letter. It didn’t come during a campaign. It was McClellan’s finest moment - when he truly saved the nation.
